The project was made for the city of Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, 8 km south of the Arctic Circle. A group project with Aukust Yrtti and Hanna Yli-Korpela.
5 month every year, lapland and the arctic circle are covered with snow. Adding the deep darkness and the ice leves the city centers with no visible zebra crossing at all. Any past attempt of heatting, de-iceing along the yeas appeared wrong so no actual solution was created.
Regarding opening copnditions of darkness and white backgraound of the snow, we have developed a concept to project the crossing marks over the snow by two crossing roadsignes. The singns are heated and creating a shading roof to prevent from sonw and ice to built on the projecting surface or on the sing's roof. The roof is equiped with solar panel for summer days. The sign is painted in glowing bright colors for better visability in bright days and in the summer and allso contain LED flushing headlights to capture passing by drivers attention. The sign allso contain a hand bar for elderly people who are waitng to cross.
The projection of the signs over the icy road is made by two laser projectors placed on the back of each road sign. Since it's projected- the crossing signs over the road can be interperated to a variable forms and colors that can mark and be decorative as well. The light it self can be used as a traffic lights for pedestrians (walk/ dont walk).
